Phase 2 reopening – 17th August

Following the successful reopening of Leisure at Cheltenham gym and classes, we are now delighted to announce our next phase when the swimming pool, squash courts and Prince of Wales Stadium will reopen to members aged 16 and over from Monday 17 August.

Swimming Pool
– Lane swimming sessions will last for an hour and, at present, swim-only memberships are not valid.
– The main pool will have three double-width lanes with a maximum of 10 swimmers per lane, so a maximum of 30 at each one hour session.
– Changing cubicles will be available for swimmers, but showers will not be in use.
– Lockers will not be available; instead there will be large plastic containers on poolside to put belongings in while you swim. These will be cleaned after every session.
– There will be new access and exit routes, which will be clearly marked.
– Lifeguards will take a register when you first arrive.
– Aqua classes will resume on Tuesday, 18 August.

Lane swimming session times
Monday to Friday: 7am-4pm and 6-8.30pm
Saturday: 8am-2.15pm
Sunday: closed

Squash courts
– Sessions must be booked online and will last 45 minutes.
– Only members can book and sessions will cost £6. One player must be a member but non-members may play with them.
– Please bring your own racquets as racquet hire will not be available.

Prince of Wales Stadium running track
-Sessions must be pre-booked online
– Members must collect a wristband from the customer service desk within the main centre.
– Members must provide their own water as water fountains will not be available.

Monday to Friday: 7-9am, noon-2pm, 4-6pm
Saturday: 8-10am
Sunday: closed

Gym hours update
From Monday 17th August, we are pleased to offer gym sessions at an earlier time of 7:15am.

Elsewhere at the centre, opening times remain the same:
Monday to Friday: 8am to 8pm
Saturday: 8am to 2pm
Sunday: closed

The following information will help you if this is your first visit to Leisure at Cheltenham. Please be advised you will be asked to queue so please do not arrive more than 15 minutes before your booked session. Please do not come to the centre if you have not booked a session as only those who have booked will be admitted. We have removed the fingerprint access readers so on your first visit you will collect a card which you will need to bring with you on each subsequent visit.

A one-way system is in place and distance markers so please help us to keep you safe by remaining 2m apart from others while you are in the centre. You will leave the centre by a designated exit which will be clearly marked. Equipment will be cleaned before and after each session. The centre will be closed on Sundays for deep cleaning.

We are delighted to announce that Leisure at Cheltenham will partially reopen to members, aged 16 and over, from Monday 27 July at 8am.

The centre will reopen indoor gym facilities and a timetable of fitness classes, in line with the latest government guidance and social distancing measures.

Please be advised that the pool will not reopen in this first phase.

Members are asked to ensure we have your correct email address and telephone number as we will be contacting all members by email. If we are unable to do so you will be contacted by phone, letters will not be sent.


When are you opening?

The centre will reopen on Monday, 27 July at 8am.


What time is the centre open?

The centre opens 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday, 8am to 2pm on Saturday and is closed on Sundays for deep cleaning. These times are subject to change so please check our website and social media for updates.

I am a member but nervous about returning to the centre, can you reassure me that Leisure at Cheltenham is adhering to the Government guidance?

We have received some positive feedback from members who have recently visited the centre since reopening. You can read testimonials here.

What facilities are you running?

We are running the indoor gym and a timetable of fitness classes. The gym has been extended into part of the sports hall with almost a full range of equipment and stations. There are both fitness classes led by an instructor and virtual exercise classes.


Will there be restrictions on numbers in the centre?

Yes. We will be limiting the number of people in the centre at the same time, so members can keep a safe distance from one another.

You will be able to book up to seven days in advance for both the gym and class. Please be advised that only members who have booked for a session will be able to enter the building, do not arrive unless you have a booked session.

Will there be restrictions on numbers in the gym?

We will be limiting the number of people in the gym at the same time, so members can keep a distance from each other in line with government guidance.


How long can I stay?

Session time vary depending on the type of activity you will be doing, although the maximum time for each member is one hour. At the end of the session you will be asked to leave the building via the designated exit.

Do I need to download the Leisure at app? Do I have to pay?

We recommend that members download our Leisure at Cheltenham App which is free to use. We currently support any devices that run Android 4.4 and higher, or iOS 9 or higher. The app is a useful tool which will allow you to book your session and receive the latest information. Please use the app or go online to book your sessions rather than phoning to do so wherever possible.

How do I get in to the centre? Will I have to queue?

You will be able to access the centre via a queuing system and turnstile on the entrance. On your first visit you will need to collect your new membership card in order to access the gym or classes, as we have now replaced the fingerprint scanners with a barcoded system.

Please do not turn up more than 15 minutes before your session to allow everyone at the previous session to leave and for us to prepare the centre for the next session.


How will I get around the centre once inside?

We will have a clearly marked one-way system around the centre to ensure social distancing. There will also be one way in and one exit from the gym areas.


Will the changing rooms be open?

No, changing rooms, showers and lockers will not be available. You will need to arrive dressed ready for your session and leave the same way.


Will there be toilets available?

We have made two toilets available in the centre for your use.


What do I need to bring and what am I not allowed to bring with me?

We advise you bring a filled water bottle as there are no water fountains in use at this time. Vending machines will be available in reception, be advised you will need to use these on your way into the building as a one-way system is in operation.

Please do not bring a towel with you, these are not allowed at this time.


Can I bring a bag with me?

We ask customers not to bring bags or rucksacks with them as the lockers are currently not in use.


How will I know I’m safe?

All government safety guidance is being followed to ensure that our members and staff are safe within the facility. This includes limited the number of people in the gym and classes at any one time, reduced equipment available to help ensure social distancing, and providing additional cleaning and hygiene equipment for our members to use.

Please sanitise your hands when arriving at the centre and throughout your visit and avoid touching your face. Please do not visit the centre if you are feeling unwell or have any symptoms of Covid19.

Please clean equipment after you have used it using the cleaning materials provided. Staff will be on hand to help if you have any queries or concerns.


Further health and safety measures:

  • Additional sanitising units throughout the centre.
  • No towels will be allowed to be brought in; we will provide paper towels and wipes.
  • Bring your own water bottles as the water fountains will be out of action.
  • Self-cleaning stations will be available for you to clean your kit before and after your session.
  • Do not arrive more than 15 minutes before your session begins.


How often do you clean the gym equipment?

The equipment will be cleaned as a minimum after every session.

Members will be provided will self-cleaning stations so they can clean the kit before and after use.

A full deep clean will be conducted on a weekly basis.


Do I need to wear a mask inside the centre?

The current government guidance does not stipulate that masks must be worn inside leisure centres. However, if you wish to wear a mask you are free to do so.


Will there be staff in the gym?

Yes, to help keep members safe we will always have team members on hand in the centre to ensure the gym is clean and to support any members as required.


Why don’t you offer a specific time for vulnerable people to access the gym?

High risk people should follow government guidelines and advice on visiting the gym. Whilst operating under restricted occupancy, we are unable to offer a specific time for vulnerable people.


Will you be running classes?

Yes, we will be running a range of classes but we will be making some changes to keep members safe. These include spin, yoga, Pilates, Pilates 50+, HIIT, body conditioning and active circuits. The latest timetable is available on our website, please follow our social media to keep up to date with any changes and our latest news.

We will also be running virtual classes to provide regular exercise for as many of our members as possible.


Will there be restrictions on numbers in the classes?

We will be limiting the number of people in our classes, so members can keep a distance from each other in line with government guidance.

Each class may have a different capacity and limits may change as we make any changes.


How often do you clean the class equipment?

The equipment will be cleaned as a minimum after every session. It is advisable that all members bring your own mat for yoga and Pilates as these will not be provided.

A full deep clean is conducted on a weekly basis and members are provided with self-cleaning stations so they can clean kit before and after use.


I can’t get a space on a class.

We will be reducing the class timetable and spaces so we can keep everyone safe, we therefore recommend that you book as early as possible. Sessions will be available to book up to seven days in advance. You can book more than one class for the following week.

We hope to start to increase availability when it is safe to do so. Class capacities will vary by size of studio and spaces operate on a first come first served basis.


Can I attend virtual classes?

Yes, we will a limited number of virtual classes and spaces so we can keep everyone safe, we therefore recommend that you book as early as possible as these classes will be limited in line with government guidance.


Will the swimming pool be open?

The pool will not re-open in this first phase. We will keep you updated and provide further information about the pool reopening date.


Why is the pool not opening at the same time as the gym?

The government’s announcement on Thursday 9 July that indoor pools could reopen was subject to meeting strict criteria for ventilation and safety. We are working through the requirements and will reopen the pool as soon as possible. The safety of our customers and staff is our priority. We are aware many members are keen to be back in the pool and we will update you as soon as we can with an opening date.


When will my membership payment start again?

Your monthly payments will start on your next direct debit date on 5 August. This will be the same date as all previous payments.


How much will my membership be?

Members will be contacted individually by email, or telephone if we do not have your email address, with the details of your specific membership, depending on how you pay.


My membership has lapsed, can I rejoin?

Yes, we will be delighted to welcome you back as a member of Leisure at Cheltenham. Please email us in the first instance and we will be happy to help you.


Are you taking on new members?

We are not currently accepting new members but please keep following our social media for updates on when memberships will open for new members.


I have a concession membership, can I return on 27 July?

We are not currently re-opening to those with concession memberships. However, you can convert your concession membership to an interim full membership and take advantage of the reopening reduced monthly fee of £25. This will enable you to book seven days in advance and to book as many sessions as you wish.

My children, who are under 16, are members, can they book a session? Can they accompany me when I come for my session?

In this first phase of reopening we are only open to members aged 16 and over. We will keep you updated on when we will be welcoming our younger members back. Unfortunately you will not be able to bring your children with you for your session at this stage.
